A downloadable game for Windows

ZERO GAUNTLET is a single-player zero-gravity prototype built in Unity 6. You are a sphere with two tethered hands. You must navigate the map by combining various movement tricks while engaging in dodgeball-like combat with enemy drones.

How it plays

  • Grab rails and posts, walk along them, and launch yourself across the room.
  • Take balls from dispensers and throw them at wall targets to open each door or at drones to destroy them. A thrown ball turns green; only a green ball hurts a drone. Real physics will apply part of your throw force to your own mobility if you are not anchored on a rail.
  • Room 1 is the tutorial. You have to complete each step on a page before it will advance to the next one. The Physics page is the final step before you can enter the time trial.
  • Room 2 adds turrets. Every hit adds five seconds to your run time. Turret ammo cannot be thrown back. The turrets guard targets; use physics and geometry to bank target hits to advance safely.
  • Room 3 adds drones. Like flying turrets that can be killed with 2 hits.  Catch their blue balls and throw them back. The targets unlock when every drone is down.
  • Room 4 is the Core, which adds a boss that fires four-shot volleys, respawning drones from a ceiling hatch, and shield pickups on pads for added defense. The target in this room open opens when the boss and all drones are defeated, and requires the boss drop Core to unlock.

Controls

  • Mouse: look. LMB: grab a rail or take a ball. Hold RMB: draw in on a rail, or charge a throw. LMB while holding RMB: launch or throw.
  • W A S D: walk along the rail you hold. Q and E: roll. Space: thrust burst, two charges.
  • F: let go with the marked hand. Ctrl: let go with both. T: tutorial panel. N: dismiss a briefing card. Esc: pause. Hold R: back to the start of the room.

Notes

  • Windows 64-bit build. Run ZeroGauntlet.exe.
  • Course capstone prototype for Circuit Stream Game Dev course. Textures are CC0 from ambientCG.
  • Feedback wanted on feel: what was frustrating, what was fun, where you got stuck. This is the prototype to work out the movement mechanics for a larger game concept!
